Update: As a point of reference two Japanese films finished in the first and second slot according to another post from THR today. The Tale of Princess Kaguya (Kaguya-hime no Monogatari), directed by Isao Takahata, opened atop the weekend box office with a $2.8 million (¥284 million) two-day take from 456 screens. Koki Mikitani’s The Kiyosu Conference (Kiyosu Kaigi), the samurai comedy which closed the Tokyo International Film Festival last month, fell to second place after two chart-topping weeks.

Update X2: While 47 Ronin finished behind two Japanese films, it topped two other American films in the Japanese Box Office Captain Phillips and Red 2, both of which are in their second week in the markeplace. You can read this piece at The Wrap.

Update X3: Variety is predicitng doom for 47 Ronin based on Japanese Box Office and it’s domestic consumer engagement score. They seem to think that because it is based on a Japanese story and has Japanese actors in it  it should have been a shoe in. Japan has a strong film market and Ronin opened against two strong contenders.

Update X4: The Wrap has reported the final Japanese Box Office numbers. 47 Ronin held at $1.3M but it finished in 5th place behind 4 Japanese films.
