Both The Hollywood Reporter and Deadline are reporting that early numbers indicate that John Wick is exceeding expectations at the box office and will finish second behind Ouija.
John Wick brought in $870,00 from the 2,000 theaters that had early showings. Today the film opened in 2,589 theater. The film is currently on pace to earn $5.5 million on Friday and $14-15 million for the 3 day weekend well above the pre-release tracking numbers of $7-8M.
Update: Box Office Mojo has the first detailed estimates posted for John Wick and Ouija.
| Movie> | John Wick | Ouija |
| Rating | R | PG13 |
| Screen Count | 2,589 | 2,858 |
| Friday estimate | $5,450,000 | $8,300,000 |
| $/screen | $2,105 | $2,904 |
Note: Ouija is playing in more theaters and has a big audience base due to its PG13 rating. All things considered, John Wick has had a very respectable start. As word of mouth buzz spreads in cities were there were no advanced screenings, attendance should pick up. While I was waiting in line for my ticket last night, folks coming out of the Wick theater were telling the rest of us in line how good it was. Ticket prices are high and a luxury for some. Folks are more apt to go see a film if others, especially someone they know, says it is good. So if you saw the film and liked it, tell everyone you know. Tweet the crap out of it and put it on your FB page if you have one of those.
