Jamie Holmes had a unique take on Side by Side, directed by Chris Kenneally and produced and hosted by Keanu Reeves for The Huffington Post. He deemed the documentary as a character study in nostalgic and pragmatic temperaments.
In covering the celluloid film vs. digital debate, he framed it in terms of the quality of the film and the nostalgic and emotional impact that it elicits. He likens it to old sentimental photographs and the sentiment they elicit. He uses comments by interviewees and examples of films to make his points.
He finishes saying:
The question of what effects the digital revolution will have on memory and nostalgia isn’t merely personal. It’s historical. It will let children in 2150 see long-dead ancestors’ wedding days in perfect HD. It will bring other cultures and countries into our living rooms with discomforting clarity, and seems certain to have the same effect across time.
