Having just seen this movie, I can wholeheartedly recommend it. The dialog is very witty, very intense. Despite the curmudgeon persona that tries to mask past pain, the affection between Keanu & Winona is palatable (unlike the love interest in Siberia). I am amazed at the long monologs. Delivery was perfect. As some critics have mentioned, in some ways this movie seems more like a play. This may be because the nature of movies nowadays has changed. I love old movies where there is verbal sparing between the leads and there are some great ones that Destination Wedding will remind you of.
There are many members of this group who live outside of SM/LA. Consider making the trip to see this movie. In many cities, theaters that cater to independent films are a bit rundown. Perhaps because of the tremendous support for the arts in Santa Monica, this is not the case with the Laemmle. The seats were wide and extremely comfortable. The screen was large and the price (before 6pm) was, at $6.00, cheap .
Rotten Tomatoes’ audience score for Destination Wedding is at 93% favorable while critics is at 42%. I hope this gives the movie some traction. Non tent-pole spectacles are so rare nowadays, as is movie dialog that is intelligent, witty and aimed at adults.
