Big Brother Will Be Watching

The MPAA and RIAA have teamed up with the five major US internet providers (AT&T, Verizon, Comcast, TIme Warner and Cablevision) to combat internet priacy of movies and music. They are launching the ‘six-strikes Copyright Alert System’.

The MPAA and RIAA will monitor peer to peer file monitoring systems and will record IP address of anyone downloading TV shows, movies or songs. They have set up a series of six escalating warnings. Punishments will be determined by ISP ranging from throttling your internet speed to temporaily cutting off your service. They will only turn over your personal information if the MPAA or RIAA decide to sue you.

The ISPs and the industry moguls were the only ones at the table. Users were not included and there appears to be no contingency for fair use, mistaken identity. All the power lies with the industry and all the burden falls on the user if there is truly no infringement. Sound familiar – corporations are people my friend!
