Industry News: End of Celluoid Distribution Almost Here

The transition to digital is the driving topic at CinemaCon this year reports The Hollywood Reporter. At the end of 2012, 85% of theaters in North America have made the switch to digital. The studios favor digital distribution due to cost savings. Theaters owners, while resistant initially, jumped on board when studios agreed to partially subsidize the cost of the transition. Couple that with the decline in availability of film stock and its processing as companies continue to stop production of film or stop offering processing services, the transition to digital is almost complete.
