Thanks Mark Mann!
Brent Roske has reviewed generation Um… for the Director’s Quorum. He also attended the premiere and duly notes that not only was Keanu in attendance but he went bowled afterwards with everyone else that was present.
Mr. Roske starts off by saying that generation Um… is the kind of movie that no longer gets made. Of the film he says:
This movie is a work of art…and also a work in progress; a moving target that evolves and shifts in perception depending on where the viewer is at that moment. It’s not an ‘easy’ film; ‘generation Um…’ challenges the actors and audience like a revival ‘No Exit’ with New York City standing in for Keanu’s Purgatory.
In recounting a bit of the story, we are reminded that ultimately it is about discovery and curiosity with Keanu’s character John leading both himself on the journey as he peels back the layers of Mia and VIolet’s lives. With respect to Keanu’s performance, Roske says,:
And Keanu Reeves is just fucking great in it. GREAT. In what is easily his gutsiest role to date, Reeves just lets it fly, playing the lead (as well as Cinematographer for some of the juiciest bits) with the quiet confidence that can only come from being a multimillionaire who is doing something purely for the sake of doing it and who could give a toss who likes it or not.
You can read the entire review here and the fact that it was written by a member of the Director’s Quorum makes it all the more special.
For some background,The Director’s Quorum is a group of professional film and television directos that meets monthly in Marina del Rey, CA. Brent Roske created the political drama Chasing the Hill with Emmy winner Richard Schiff.
