Kirsten Acuna has taken a look at the performance of 47 Ronin for the San Francisco Gate. Among other things she attributes the under performance to oversaturation of of the market at Christmas time and the fact that the film sat in the Universal vault for so long. She thought the film may have fared better if it had been released after the holidays when the pickings were slimmer. She also made a point of saying:
You can say Reeves’ star may have faded a bit; however, it’s clear audiences still will go out to see the actor if audience reception for the film is better than what the critics say.
