Many thanks to comet for the heads up on Box Office estimates being out.
Here are the Box Office estimates for the top 10 films on Christmas Day (column 3). While 47 Ronin is officially in 6th place, it is is 4th place if you look at money earned per screen. As comet said in her comment, considering the beating it is taking from critics and the fact that Universal kicked it to the curb, It had a respectable showing of $2604 per screen on it’s first day. Whether it has legs remains to be seen and will depend on word of mouth.
Update: Actual numbers are in for Wednesday and 47 Ronin made $7,031735. Variety is also reporting that it opened in 14 territories for a total of $10M through Wednesday. In addition to finishing first in Malaysia and SIngapore, it also finished first in Thailand and Taiwan. While the film is having success in these markets, their markets are small in terms of screen counts and total revenue generated.
Update X2: The table has been updated with the actual numbers from Boxoffice Mojo (same link as above).
Update X3: BoxOffice is reporting:
Universal reports that 47 Ronin bagged $7.0 million(actual $7,031,735) in its first day, earning a “B+” CinemaScore (“A-” from males, as the studio notes). We expect the film to bank $14.2 million over the weekend for a $26 million five-day start.
