There has been a lot of news lately about the Huairou Film Base near Beijing, currently billed as the largest studio complex in Asia. Pinewood Studios in the UK also wants a piece of the action and is positioning themselves to do just that.
Pinewood Studios is planning to expand and build one of the largest film centers in the world. They want to attract everything from Hollywood tentpoles to video games. This latest venture was fueled by the loss of major films, including 47 Ronin, to other international film centers due to a lack of space. While a significant portion of 47 Ronin was filmed at Pinewood, the studio did not have the space to accommodate some of the sets. As a result, 47 Ronin shot some of their footage in Hungary. Pinewood Studio is focused on expanding to stay competitive internationally as a result.
