First Hand Report on the Side by Side Screening at the ASC

Joe Rubinstein and Elle from Digital Bolex were invited to the Side by Side screening at the American Society of Cinematographers on August 20, 2012. After the screening there was a Q&A session with producer and host Keanu Reeves, director Chris Kenneally and cinematographer Chris Cassidy.

Mr. Rubinstein reports that 100 of the smartest and active people in cinematography attended the screening. He thought the film was excellent and well balanced. He went into the film expecting many of the ASC members to discount the content of the film and to argue that film had been around for 100 years and would continue to be around for another 100 years. As a result of the film being so well balanced that did not happen. Near the end of the Q&A one of the ASC members said:

…filmmakers are storytellers, and the tools and techniques we use to do this have been evolving since man first started to talk. The importance isn’t the continued use of a tool, but the continued stewardship of storytelling, its traditions, and its meaning from one generation to another.

Mr. Rubinstein also covers more of the Q&A session in the piece and mentions that afterward he had a chance to talked to Keanu who asked some intelligent questions about the D16. (Digital Bolex makes the D16 camera).
