The Matrix, starring Keanu Reeves, was deemed culturally significant enough to be included on this years National Film Registry list by the librarian of Congress, James H. Billington.
In 1989 Congress established the National Film Registry to preserve the film heritage of the USA. Films are chosen for their importance to American culture and not their popularity.
Every year the librarian of Congress must select 25 films that are at least 10 years old and deemed “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” as dictated by the National Film Preservation Act.
