Weekend Box Office Estimates Posted – Update X2!

Box Office Mojo has posted the estimate for the weekend for John Wick. The film finishes the weekend with a box office of $14,150,000. The Friday estimate, which included the early screening from Thursday, was $5,450,000,  Saturday’s was $10,820,000 and Sundays is projected at $3,330,000. Actual numbers should be posted sometime tomorrow.

The film opened in five foreign markets on October23/24 and we should start to see those numbers later in the week.

As an aside, horror films open strong but seldom develop legs and are short lived at the box office. Next week John Wick‘s major competitor will be Night Crawler which is opening wide and is currently trending at 83% fresh on rotten tomatoes.

Update: Here’s some demographic information from The Hollywood Reporter on Ouija and John Wick:

More than 60 percent of Ouija ticket buyers were females, while 75 percent of the audience was under the age of 25 and nearly 40 percent, Hispanic.

John Wick was the mirror opposite: Males made up 60 percent of the audience, while 77 percent of the audience was over the age of 25.

Update X2Forbes has posted an article on the box office numbers that you can read here.

Note: Someone needs to tell Liongate and the rest of the studios/distributors that women spend money to go to the movies too. Maybe they should be targeting all demographic groups.  In my theater the split between men and women was closer to 50:50. With respect to age there were mostly older folks and guys that looked like they were in their late teens/early 20’s. With that being said, I went to the 5 pm show when those who would be most apt to see the film were still at work.
