The LA Times Blog is reporting that two sources familiar with the matter have indicated that the release date for 47 Ronin will be pushed back to February 8, 2013.
Universal is worried that the 3D film, which is heavy on special effects, will not be ready it time. Further, a trailer will be not ready for showing in packed theaters this summer. Sources report that additional footage will be shot as well as some other changes being made. It is not clear what effect these changes will have on the originally reported budget of $175M for the film.
The delay in the release of 47 Ronin leaves Universal in the lurch with no other films opening between August 3 and December 14.
